An attempt was made to gain an insight into deviant behavior by asking Dutch U students to violate implicit norms in public situations, & to submit written reports for qualitative analysis. Ss repeatedly tried to ameliorate their discomfort during the experiments by various tricks or coping modes. Several modes are distinguished, including accentuating normal behavioral aspects, verbal & nonverbal legitimizing, & escaping social consequences. These results are compared with findings reported in the sociological literature on accountability. 1 Table, 24 References. Modified HA
