Samenvatting

In an attempt to provide better housing for ethnic minorities currently concentrated in the older residential districts in the inner city of Rotterdam, the Netherlands, & to reduce the social problems of these districts, the city government promoted a policy of "bundled deconcentration," in which vacant dwellings in certain residential districts in the outer city were allocated to Turkish families. The reasons why some families do not accept such housing are examined, utilizing data from 15 nonacceptors & 50 acceptors. While expense is the most often mentioned motive, nonacceptors often had higher incomes than acceptors. However, acceptors can be characterized as having a more westernized culture pattern. Obstacles such as unfamiliarity with bureaucracy & ignorance of housing grants also limit acceptance. It is expected that decreased residential mobility of the native Dutch population will also limit the future mobility of immigrants, & that both Dutch & immigrant mobility will be limited as well by reductions in housing grants. 1 Table, 22 References.
