An analysis of Carlo Ginzburg's The Cheese and the Worms (London: Routledge & Kegan Paul, 1980) is presented as a contribution to text sociology. Ginzburg describes historical interpretation as a comparative reading of two corpora of texts. He interprets the differences between the corpora in a documentary manner. Linguistic methods are developed to give a literal description of such differences, providing a way out of the sociologist's dilemma between documentary method & literal description. 3 Figures, 21 References.
