Samenvatting

Urban change & Urban planning are analyzed using an institutional-economic approach; Urban development reflects the pressure of technological changes & institutions, along with economic criteria -- reduction of cost & maximization of profit & incomes. The organizational notion that institutions are action-oriented instruments to strengthen the position of certain groups is the approach taken to examine two case studies: (1) the relation between the spatial structure of real estate prices & transportation technology; & (2) the Urban labor market. In the first case, it is shown that there is a relation between investments in Urban mass transportation & the spatial price structure of real estate that has had an impact on income distribution via the housing market. In the second case, it is shown that the Urban labor market is segmented spatially & socially. Residential districts show remarkable differentiation in characteristics; unemployment & residential location are related. Technological change most hurts those in the weakest position. Only strong economic growth & the development of better paid service jobs will save the developing Urban underclass. 1 Table, 31 References. Modified HA
