Samenvatting

Does the work of anthropologists in the Netherlands in Urban situations represent a new "Urban" specialty in Dutch anthropology? An attempt is made to specify the boundaries of this field by comparing two US journals that represent a new generation of Urban researchers: Urban Anthropology & Urban Life. The first is heavily theoretical, whereas the second is predominantly descriptive, but there are several points of overlap, such as a strong notion of cultural relativism. On the basis of some paradigmatic studies in the field, a research model for Urban anthropology (& ethnography) is suggested -- the everchanging relationship between the private & public spheres. This might be used as a strategic device for anthropologists to encounter representatives of other disciplines who are interested in Urban studies. 41 References. Modified HA
