Samenvatting

A discussion of qualitative methodology in general & analytical induction in particular. Proceeding from the analytical induction proposed by Florian Znaniecki (The Method of Sociology, New York: Octagon, 1934), it is concluded that his basic idea (the inductive viewpoint, respect for facts, dynamic attitude, special treatment of exceptions, claim for validity, & intentional approach) are very promising at first sight. However, in his elaboration of analytical induction as a scientific method, he did not clarify how researchers should implement these ideas, & his proponents of the the 1950s were unable to make his methodology more concrete. Thus, a positive assessment of Znaniecki's ideas is mitigated by doubts about their practical implications. 16 References. Modified HA.
