Samenvatting

Whenever institutions are in trouble due to a critical developmental phase, reflection will increase, serving as an instrument to guarantee their continued existence. Reflection in modern art & art criticism, however, has been going on for more than 100 years. This can be viewed as an example of a means-end reversal. The reflection once begun in a revolutionary period of art history gradually lost its instrumental function & became an end in itself. Modern art is no longer problematic because questioning & problem solving have become an integrated part of art per se. Discussed are the need for commentary, the legitimization of art & art criticism through science, worldview & art history, introspection, & processes by which reflection becomes routine. Modified HA.
