Samenvatting

The activities of the interdisciplinary multilevel workgroup of the Faculty of the Social Sciences of Erasmus U in Rotterdam, Netherlands, are discussed. Werner Sombart's classic sociological study, Warum gibt es in den Vereinigten Staaten keinen Sozialismus? (Tubingen, 1906; English translation by Hocking, P. M., & Husbands, C. T., Why Is There No Socialism in the United States?, London: Macmillan Press, 1976), is put forth as an example of a brilliant macrosociological analysis, except that it fails to deal adequately with the severe multilevel problems inherent in this type of analysis. The major comparative & multilevel problems in the study are identified, & it is concluded that Sombart's explanation of nonsocialism in the US fails because of his inability to treat multilevel problems systematically. The need for a multilevel methodology is suggested. 4 Schemas, 3 References. Modified HA
