British sociologist & theorist Anthony Giddens (eg, The Constitution of Society: Outline of the Theory of Structuration, see IRPS No. 26/85c00433) is discussed as a leading proponent of a general reorientation of the social sciences. Giddens's structuration theory, an attempt to reach a methodological reconstruction of social theory based on the notion of the "duality of structure," is first reviewed. His more substantial theory of industrial society, in which he extensively argues & subsequently rejects evolutionist schemes of historical development, is then considered.
