Samenvatting

The thesis that M-F relations in Andalusia, Spain, are characterized by notions of honor & shame, put forward by J. A. Pitt-Rivers (The People of the Sierra [2nd edition], Chicago: U of Chicago Press, 1974) & many of his successors, is here confronted with recent ethnographic data from Peralto, Andalusia. Notions of honor & shame are still at a premium & express themselves especially in a rather extreme form of emotional distance between the sexes. The old elite & most of the men appear to have an interest in preserving this form of M-F relations; but becoming more & more opposed to the traditional forms are the Mc, youth, & most women. This gradual "modernization" of M-F relations is explained by changes in the relations of power, both between SCs & between the sexes. 24 References. HA
