Samenvatting

A fourfold typology of localism & cosmopolitanism, derived from the ideas of Robert K. Merton (Social Theory and Social Structure, enlarged edition, New York, 1968 [see SA 7:3/576037]) is used to interpret the mass media behavior of a sample of 55 Dutch burgomasters. The influence of 3 types of variables -- (1) career, background, & context; (2) memberships & contacts; & (3) attitudes toward growth -- on the 4 orientations identified is examined. Results indicate that the cosmo-local model represents a successful type of burgomaster. The differences between the 4 orientations is relevant to local officials' strategies of & bases for power & influence. 6 Tables, 24 References. Modified HA
