Samenvatting

An overview of the work of Dutch social scientists in the area of colonial studies before WWII. While colonial studies received attention in both Amsterdam & Utrecht, Amsterdam sociographers investigated a broader range of topics, including four main topics: (1) colonization of tropical areas by white settlers; (2) estate vs native agriculture; (3) industrialization; & (4) modernization. The Amsterdam studies took population growth as their starting point, but Utrecht authors generally started from geographic factors; most authors accepted the colonial system. Rich empirical material was produced, but with little theoretical depth. 24 References. Modified HA
