A study of informal economic activities in Great Paramaribo, Surinam, based on interview data obtained from small independent furniture makers & car mechanics (N not given) from July 1979 to July 1980, & in July & Aug 1981. The informal economic sector, made up of economic activities performed on the family level, has an external framework, defined by the particular market situation. Both the state & large private firms play a key role in the functioning of this external framework; thus, the dynamics of the informal sector are closely tied to the performance of the national economy. The prognosis for the 1980s is made difficult by recent changes in the government. 21 References. Modified HA
