Samenvatting

A review essay on J. M. G. Leune's Van zes tot twaalf; een longitudinaal onderzoek naar de milieu- en schooleffecten van loopbanen in het lager onderwijs ([From Six to Twelve: A Longitudinal Study of the Environmental & Academic Effects of Careers in Basic Education], Harlingen, 1984 [see listing in IRPS No. 37). Several shortcomings are noted in Leune's study on the relationship between levels of academic achievement, IQ in grade 1, subsequent change in IQ, & school environment in a sample of 728 Dutch elementary schoolchildren, based on examination of school records. No attention is given to measuring the quality of instruction or to the type of material taught. More than 24 schools should have been studied to provide a more valid database. M. Meeks
