Samenvatting

Erratum Table 3! Social research on the elderly has focused primarily on social indciators, eg, use of social services, housing needs, health, social isolation, disposable income, & social security. Several social developments -- eg, the rapidly increasing proportion of older people within the total population, their expression of political claims, emancipation trends, & their improved economic outlook -- underline the growing social significance of the elderly. Dutch national survey data are used to compare a wide range of social & political attitudes for 3 age groups: 25-54, 55-64, & 65-74. The results show many attitudinal similarities, but also some clear differences, generally reflecting public notions about the elderly. They do not reveal that the elderly are moving in a direction that differs drastically from the rest of the population. Subsequent cohort analyses do not support explanations of these differences. No evidence could be found for current popular hypotheses about possibly diverging norms, beliefs, values, & attitudes among the elderly of the future. 9 Tables, 50 References. Modified HA
