Quantitative & interpretative research differ in their emphasis on explanations, in the find-spots of explanations, & in the rules & criteria for correct explanations. Some of these differences result from differences in problem formulations: explanation of the behavior of social categories vs interpretation of the behavior of a specific person in a specific situation. Despite these differences, the deductive-nomological model can advantageously be applied to both, because it forces researchers to be explicit, to think about the origin of the situation observed, & to make predictions. 12 References.
