Samenvatting

It is suggested that a psychiatric judgement of a patient is not one individual's interpretation of the patient's behavior, but is a reformulation of accounts given by the patient & others. Analysis of a report from a practice of emergency psychiatry shows how a psychiatric judgment is constructed by reformulating & transforming the accounts of the patient & others, & how these reformations are put into a psychiatric context. Analysis of this process suggests that while Harold Garfinkel's (Studies in Ethnomethodology, Prentice-Hall, 1967) thesis that a literal description of sociological evidence is impossible applies to behavior, it does not apply to textual processes. Since many sociological processes have a textual character, much sociological evidence can be described literally. 2 Figures, 1 Appendix, 8 References. Modified HA
