Samenvatting

The feminist movement of the 1960s was accompanied by a general interest in women's position in Third World countries, resulting in debate over the practice of clitoridectomy. Feminist groups generally condemned this as a M attempt to control F sexuality, but failed to distinguish between either the different forms of F circumcision or the social settings where they occur. A case study of clitoridectormy among the Masai of Africa against the social, cultural, & political background of their tribal organization gives evidence to suggest that the general argument for condemnation has no validity in their case. 22 References.
