Although data collection by means of computers is increasing in the social & behavioral sciences, there is a lack of systematic knowledge about how the use of computers affects the process of data collection, as well as the validity & reliability of the data. The sources of bias reviewed include: computer anxiety, the nature of response sets, social desirability bias, differences in duration of data collection, differences in accuracy, & experimenter effects. Despite these methodological problems, data collected via computer do not appear to differ significantly from data collected by other means. 84 References. Modified HA
