Samenvatting

In the current economic crisis, references are frequently made to the unemployment of the 1930s. However, there appears to be little systematic comparison in terms of the numbers of unemployed, the different age & social groups affected, the regional distribution, & causes of unemployment. Several points of similarity can be noted: a relatively low level of unemployment among young people & women, & a higher level among the Lcs. The rapidly declining unemployment among young people at the end of the 1930s might have occurred because young laborers were willing to accept lower wages & were flexible. 13 Tables, 2 Appendixes, 6 References.
