Samenvatting

Current postmaterialist theory presumes that the relationship between age & postmaterialist values is primarily determined by early socialization effects rather than by life-course effects. Since it is impossible to distinguish between these effects in a cross-sectional research design, a different strategy is suggested: ie, to interpret both types of effects by theoretically relevant variables. Thus, socialization effects are divided into individual & structural components, & explicit interpretations for the development of postmaterialist values are offered in which both effects are identified. Estimation of the models using empirical data from Utrecht, the Netherlands, suggests that the association between age & value patterns is largely due to educational attainment; direct family background & life-course events play a far less important role. The large residual effect on postmaterialism suggests that structural socialization effects are considerable. 2 Tables, 1 Appendix, 29 References. Modified HA
