Samenvatting

The social meaning of land & landed property has been changed in a profound way by the processes of commercialization of land, industrialization, & urbanization. These changes have occurred throughout Europe, but not everywhere at the same time or rate. In the Netherlands, landed property traditionally has not been as important a social factor as in other European societies; the social elite in Dutch society since the fifteenth century have been predominantly tradesmen. In contemporary Dutch society, there are still traces of this relatively limited meaning assigned to landed property. In the constitution, landed property is not recognized as a basic social right, & owning one's home is not as self-evidently aspired to by socially mobile people as it is, for instance, in GB. 29 References.
