Samenvatting

An attempt to explain the differential development of self-esteem among Ms & Fs during puberty & adolescence in terms of differences in the influence of biological & sociocultural processes. Written questionnaire data obtained from a cohort of 162 boys & 196 girls at 3 different points in their secondary school careers support the hypothesis that girls' self-esteem depends more strongly on perceptions of parental emotional support, while boys' is more dependent on self-actualization. By early adolescence, self-actualization becomes an important determinant for girls as well, & the effect of emotional support levels off. 3 Tables, 17 References. Modified HA
