Samenvatting

During 1984/85, militant groups of Ur-oriented young Maroons ("bush Negros") began to oppose police & government officials in Surinam's coastal plain, & in 1986, army units initiated a policy of collective reprisals against Maroon villages suspected of sheltering rebels. As a result, isolated acts of protest & rebellion assumed the character of a general uprising. Various ways by which the militant youths became reoriented, rediscovering "tradition" through oracles & medicine men, are examined. 2 Maps, 9 References. Modified HA
