A review essay on a book by Willem de Nijs, Alain Touraine. Het sociologisch geweten van de geprogrammeerde samenleving ([Alain Touraine. The Sociological Conscience of Programmed Society] Tilburg, the Netherlands: Tilburg U Press, 1987 [see listing in IRPS No. 46]). De Nijs does not review Touraine's contributions on postindustrial society or the concrete role of social movements therein. Rather, this work serves as an important step toward a deeper understanding of the theoretical continuity of Alain Touraine. M. Barker
