A reply to Edien Bartels's comments (see SA 36:3/88T5659) on Irene D. Ubbink's "Clitoridectomie bij de Masai, een poging tot interpretatie" ([Clitoridectomy among the Masai, an Interpretation] see SA 36:1/88T1564). Bartels's arguments are rebutted, & certain local customs & standards are elaborated on. It is concluded that most discussion of the place & function of clitoridectomy within the social organization of tribal societies in contemporary scientific publications lacks information on the social, cultural, & political origins of different forms of clitoridectomy in concrete societies. 3 References.
