The rise of youth revolt & second-wave feminism in the 1960s, & the decline of youth in the 1970s, are interpreted against the background of postwar SE & political developments & the specific SS of young adults & women during the past decades. It is argued that the development of both streams of protest fit more readily into Alexis de Tocqueville's model of "rising expectations" than into Karl Marx's model of increasing misery. 23 References.
