Samenvatting

Data from social surveys conducted in 1980-1986 in the Netherlands (total N = 7,650 Rs) are used to test several assumptions promulgated by the media regarding the unique social, economic, & political attitudes of "yuppies," ie, young Ur professionals. Though it is shown that yuppies do hold more liberal political attitudes than nonyuppies, there is no evidence for their supposed economic conservatism, greater political disengagement, or stronger emphasis on individual welfare. The assumption that the distinctiveness of yuppies can be explained by interaction effects of their youth, urbanity, & professional status over & beyond the simple additive effects of these variables is rejected; more restrictive definitions of yuppies do not change these results. Neither do yuppies differ from nonyuppies on attitudinal variables. It is concluded that yuppies are not a specific social group, but part of a much broader category of young leftist professionals who hold, according to new class theories, liberal political attitudes. 3 Tables, 2 Appendixes, 17 References.
