Samenvatting

As a consequence of vast restoration activities in the 1980s, a rough terrain has developed behind the Amsterdam Zoo (Artis) in the Netherlands. Visitors to the zoo are often placed in an embarrassing situation when trying to park their cars in this area, which has been transformed into an eccentric colony of squatters. Observations were conducted of visitors' (N not provided) reactions during such confrontations in an attempt to understand how humans cope with the complexities of modern Ur life. Though the perspective employed by Lyn Lofland in A World of Strangers. Order and Action in Urban Public Space (New York: Basic Books, 1973) was readily applicable, its concepts proved to be very thin in the specific area of "embarrassing" situations. 10 References.
