Samenvatting

Winti, an Afro-Surinamese religion, is a controversial topic both in Surinam & among Surinamese immigrants in the Netherlands. Some regard it as a key to ethnic identity, while others see it as a relic from the past, functioning as a crutch for disadvantaged groups; the latter case was investigated in the Bijlmermeer section of Amsterdam. In contrast to the view that Winti believers are old-fashioned & idolatrous, it is shown here that Winti helps pave the way to more successful participation in the wider society. Special attention is given to a feminist analysis of Winti beliefs about demons. 16 References. Modified HA
