A review essay on books by: Ton Mooij, Interactional Multi-Level Investigation into Pupil Behaviour, Achievement, Competence, and Orientation in Educational Situations ('s-Gravenhage, Netherlands: Instit voor Onderzoek van het Onderwijs, 1987); Hannes Alpheis, Kontextanalyse. Der Wirkung des sozialen Umfeldes, untersucht am Beispiel der Eingliederung von Auslandern ([Context Analysis: The Effect of Social Environment, Studied on the Basis of a Group of Foreigners] Wiesbaden: Deutsche U Verlag, 1988); Matthias von Saldern, Sozialklima von Schulklassen. Uberlegungen und mehrebenenanalytische Untersuchungen zur subjektiven Wahrnehmung von Lernumwelten ([Social Classes of School Classes: Considerations and Multilevel: Analytical Studies of the Subjective Perception of Learning Environment] Frankfurt am Main: Verlag Peter Lang, 1987); & Greta Gerda Kreft, Models and Methods for the Measurement of School Effects (Utrecht: Elinkwijk, 1987 [see listings in IRPS No. 56]). These books discuss the latest theoretical & methodological developments in multilevel research on a theoretical link between school characteristics & pupil achievement. This interaction is conceptualized in terms of various time-space processes. For explaining contextual effects, rational choice theory offers some interesting prospects. Also, the possibilities of operationalizing school climate & other educational situations are reviewed. Finally, a plea is made for the applcation of a random coefficient or variance component model for estimating appropriate parameters within contexts. 11 References. Modified AA
