Samenvatting

An exploration of two current concerns in the field of social security: (1) Are social benefits perceived as rights or favors? (2) Is the privacy of those who claim or receive social benefits perceived as sufficiently guaranteed by authorities? Data from a national survey of Dutch adults are analyzed from the perspective of modernization theory. It is concluded that a large majority consider social benefits as rights & a minority perceive the privacy of those receiving benefits as insufficiently guaranteed; these variations can partly be reduced to cultural factors. 3 Tables, 2 Figures, 26 References.
