Samenvatting

In modern society, organizations grow more dependent on each other in both competitive & symbiotic ways, leading to the emergence of complex networks of interdependent organizations. In many of these networks, the need for elaborate mechanisms of coordination & accommodation of these interdependencies gives rise to the establishment of an organization of organizations, eg, a federation, association, or alliance. A theoretical frame of reference is presented for the understanding of the genesis & development of such interorganizational structures in the Dutch nonprofit sector, illustrated by the historical restructuring of mental health services in Amsterdam into five regional institutes for ambulatory mental health care from 1965 to 1984. 1 Figure, 16 References.
