Samenvatting

Since the publication of Richard Centers's The Psychology of Social Classes: A Study of Class Consciousness (Princeton: Princeton U Press, 1949), the question of whether social classes are meaningful to Americans has been addressed by a number of quantitative studies. A literature review shows that the empirical findings indicate that, contrary to conventional wisdom, class remains an important aspect of the US perception of social inequality. The common assumption that the absence of class conflict in the US is a consequence of the weakness of class consciousness among workers must be reconsidered. Possible causes of the absence of similar research in Western Europe are discussed along with the possible merits such an undertaking would produce. 44 References. Modified HA
