Samenvatting

A test of the hypotheses that: Dutch elementary schools are differentiated according to cultural vs economic orientation, & various schools recruit from homes with greater cultural vs economic resources in accordance with Pierre Bourdieu's cultural capital theory (Distinction: A Social Critique of the Judgment of Taste, London, [see IRPS No. 30/85c00542]). Data were obtained via questionnaire from families (N = 142) in a mid-sized town. Analysis confirms both hypotheses, showing that cultural differences between homes are even greater when a strong interest is expressed in avant-garde literature & music. However, it was difficult to analyze the preferences of the children themselves. 18 Tables. Adapted from the source document.
