Samenvatting

An examination of Robert K. Merton's "Social Structure and Anomie" (in Social Theory and Social Structure [see SA 7:3/596037]) reveals a lack of coherence despite its use as a theoretical basis by many sociologists & criminologists. Problems result from overreliance on the goal of success, & insufficient attention to the scale measuring conformity/deviant behavior. Additional typologies suggested by other sociologists to augment Merton's system contribute little. Ultimately Merton's theory becomes too simplistic to be employed as a model. 7 Tables, 34 References. Adapted from the source document.
