The traditional emphasis on quantity in relation to industries involved in mass production has been replaced by a concern for the quality of products & services. However, the same kind of emphasis on the quality of work is seldom evident. Employees are willing to expend the effort to produce the highest quality product only if the employer exhibits an interest in the quality of their work. Workers commonly reject managerial strategies such as flexibility, direct task control, multiskilling, & variable payment systems, while stressing such aspects as security, autonomy, optimal use of a worker's qualifications, & just wages.
