Samenvatting

A study of the city in relation to the perceived move from modernity to postmodernity, a transformation seen as manifesting itself in terms of the use of space & categories of activities. There are two primary changes from the older or bourgeois city to the contemporary one: (1) high culture is no longer at the center of city life, but is now employed more as an attraction or option available within the city, & as a marketing tool for the city in terms of tourist attraction; & (2) the techniques of surveillance & control of the lower classes have changed from education & rehabilitation to harsher programs of expulsion & containment. An explanation of these changes on a macrosociological level is presented. 60 References. Modified HA
