Samenvatting

An investigation of the undersocialization of the homeless from a sociological perspective. Emile Durkheim's Suicide -- A Study in Sociology (London: Routledge & Kegan Paul, 1952 [1892]) established the distinction between excessive & insufficient individualization. Recent studies have suggested that homelessness can be simultaneously an escape from insufficient social integration & from social bonds that are too strong. Modernization theory, which addresses social change & its impact on individuals, has found that under conditions of changing social networks, many people unable to cope with unsteady support systems & professional help are increasingly at risk, & small problems can propel them into homelessness. Implications for social policy are considered. 34 References. Adapted from the source document.
