Samenvatting

Interview data collected over 3 years are used to examine orientations toward participation in the labor market among 120 Dutch students, ages 16-19. Analysis reveals that most young women lack positive role models of women working in nontraditional fields; also, women do not communicate with each other about work experiences. Thus, they develop a diffuse orientation toward paid labor, failing to relate work with motherhood; as such, many young women see their careers in terms of chance. 4 Tables.
