Samenvatting

To investigate absolute & relative income development for both age groups & birth cohorts, data were examined from surveys conducted 1974-1983 by the Dutch Central Bureau of Statistics. A socioeconomic breakdown hypothesis, indicating that the income position of cohorts worsens with increasing age, is supported by analyzing reconstructed parts of income careers. A second hypothesis that younger birth cohorts enjoy a better income position than older birth cohorts measured at the same state of life is also confirmed. It is concluded that income distribution remains stable throughout one's life. Implications for changes in income distribution are uncertain. 3 Tables, 3 Figures, 6 References.
