Samenvatting

The sharp increase in crime in the Netherlands & other countries in recent decades is largely an urban phenomenon. Using particularistic definitions of crime situations, various strategies are developed by urbanites to avoid confrontations with danger, which may be general or specific only to a certain location or type of behavior; eg, exchanges of information about crimes & victims are used to compose mental maps that serve as guides for social life. Following an analysis of such strategies, it is considered whether they are successful in helping residents avoid criminal victimization. 19 References. Adapted from the source document.
