Samenvatting

Modern poverty, focusing on its existence in the Netherlands, is described as the structural exclusion of citizens from social participation, concomitant with their permanent dependence on the state. These two interrelated processes are evident in the seven features of poverty: insufficient income, social isolation, lack of benefit from public facilities, welfare dependency, feelings of deprivation, concentration in poor neighborhoods, & promotion of a culture of welfare dependency. Discussed in conclusion is the role of social policy in the creation & perpetuation of modern poverty. 1 Table, 51 References. Adapted from the source document.
