Samenvatting

The historical influence of the Chicago school of sociology is examined, based on a content analysis of 75 introductory sociology textbooks. About 33% made no mention of sociological research at the U of Chicago (IL); in many books, information is nonuniform & sketchy. A review of the university's archives revealed the centrality of Robert E. Park's "The Urban Community as a Spatial Pattern and a Moral Order" (1926) to the Chicago school tradition. The core of the Chicago school consisted of urban ethnographic activities, organized in a journalistic function; however, since the 1960s, the U of Chicago has been viewed as the birthplace of symbolic interactionism. In contrast to sociology, social & cultural anthropology, social geography, & social history have witnessed a recent renewal of interest in the urban tradition of the Chicago school. 51 References.
