Samenvatting

To investigate attitudes toward ethnic minorities in the Netherlands, interview data were obtained from 11 Dutch adults, ages 30-70, in evening discussion groups in a downtown Rotterdam neighborhood. Common positions used in arguing in behalf of & against ethnic minorities were analyzed. Modern democratic values -- eg, freedom, equality, rationality, & human rights -- were mentioned by respondents irrespective of racist or antiracist sentiments. Democratic values were not questioned per se; rather, they were selectively employed to fit racist or antiracist lines of argumentation. Thus, an appeal to democratic values is insufficient to fight racism. The key factor appears to be the real living conditions in established neighborhoods. 21 References.
