In response to recent claims that modernization theory is incapable of explaining the emergence of new categories of homeless people (eg, women, the young, & refugees), it is argued that no other macrosociological approach, by itself, does any better. Several theories are surveyed & found to have much to offer one another. Four key theoretical concepts -- socialization, territory, privation, & modernization -- taken together, may offer the beginning of an account of the multifaceted problem of homelessness. 24 References.
