Samenvatting

The effectiveness of coder training in improving the intercoder reliability of coding responses to open-ended questions is generally attributed to successful communication of the theoretical background to a given coding scheme. Here, 5 selections from transcripts of conversations between a researcher & 2 coders are presented, suggesting that intercoder reliability is, in part, achieved by the socialization of coders in a set of practical rules independent of the coding instructions. The apparent success of coder training may thus be a training artifact. Researchers in coder training are urged to apply more stringent controls. 5 Tables, 1 Appendix, 13 References.
