Samenvatting

A literature review is presented to analyze the influence of unintended socialization on the identity formation of unskilled youth in the Netherlands & other countries. Focus is on the following aspects of socialization: (1) the informal contact with peers where group subculture produces a collective identity from which individual identity can be derived apart from identity ascribed by class, gender, education, or profession; & (2) the increasing influence of mass consumption & mass media. The extension of adolescence offers new possibilities for the unskilled & leads to greater self-consciousness & a stronger sense of individuality. However, the new identities that emerge have primarily an aesthetic-expressive nature. On an ethical level, the traditional contexts of meaning retain their importance as a source of identification, especially for boys. The traditional image of the male breadwinner can be reconciled with the new emphasis on self-consciousness. Girls are more ambivalent, as the traditional image of housewife & mother cannot be so easily reconciled with an emphasis on individuality. 41 References. Adapted from the source document.
