Samenvatting

To investigate how the life course perspectives & expectations for adulthood & career differ among indigenous Dutch youth & their immigrant peers, interview data were obtained in 1988 from 270 adolescents (N = 120 Dutch, 53 Turks, 42 Moroccans, 23 Surinamese Hindus, & 32 Surinamese Creoles). Results indicate that the existing literature does not adequately account for the low achievement level of the immigrants. In fact, the Dutch & immigrant youth show a surprising similarity in terms of their overall attitudes. Thus, instead of blaming a supposed cultural gap for the divergence in achievement, more adequate explanation & solution might be arrived at by actively incorporating immigrant parents into the career counseling process for their children. In this way, the parents' lack of knowledge about how the educational system works could be remedied. 10 Tables, 27 References. Adapted from the source document.
