Samenvatting

Although the Western media may give the impression that almost all Eastern European Jews are emigrating to Israel, there remain several million Jews in the former USSR. It is unlikely that those remaining will be assimilated, since in many places Jews meet increasing discrimination. Attention is focused on two rival Orthodox communitiea in Chisinau, Moldava. The Chabad community is part of the mystical Lubavitcher Hassidic sect, with roots in eighteenth-century Poland, while the Agoeda is a Zionist-inspired group with origins in the US & a strong base in Israel. Both groups view the former communist nations as territories for expansion. Agoeda seeks to recruit young members, while Chabad is interested in all age groups. The government is encouraging continued contact with the international Jewish community as a source of hard currency. Religious developments may ultimately affect the political situation. 12 References. Adapted from the source document.
